Huangsi Academy is the only remaining college of heritage in Taichung City. Built by the local gentry such as Zhao Shun fang of Guangxu, Qing Dynasty, Huangsi Academy was the early cultural and educational center in the Dadu, Wuri and Longji area of Taichung. Huangsi Academy had long been dilapidated after several regime transitions coupled with natural disasters, war catastrophe and vandalism. Fortunately, due to the efforts of local residents and the government, the academy was repaired to regain its former glory and has maintained the traditional rustic cultural atmosphere of the Qing Dynasty. Through official records and field research, this study addresses the following aspects of Huangsi Academy: the present and past history, Wenchang Ceremonies and architectural aesthetics. The results indicate that Huangsi Academy has the most magnificent brick architecture in Taiwan. The buildings in the academy have been considered as traditional craft art treasure. It has become the mission to maintain from generation to generation the Wenchang birthday ceremony, which has lasted more than one hundred and twenty years. The academy is witness to the prosperous Dadu history as well as to the closely related modern history of the Taichung coastal line area. Hopefully, this study can provide administrative offices with a more diverse perspective in terms of maintenance and use of monuments. Additionally, the academy can also bring its value of cultural assets into full play and promote local prosperity as well as vitality.
